The Power of Momentum: What’s next on the trajectory towards gender equality?

It doesn’t stop here. There is much work to be done. There is opposition to the issues, but also many upcoming opportunities that can help move the needle further for gender equality and girls’ and women’s health and rights. The Power of Momentum will discuss the incredible potential for progress when moments, movements, and investments are linked and coordinated. We will explore the way forward, connecting WD2019, the French G7, ICPD+25, Beijing+25, and other key political moments. And we will discuss how we can seize funding, commitments, and enthusiasm to propel exponential progress.

Do No Harm: Local to Global Efforts to Prevent and Address Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in Humanitarian Settings

Conflict-affected girls and women increasingly rely on humanitarian assistance for survival, placing power at the hands of aid workers and peacekeepers. Such a power imbalance increases risk of sexual exploitation and abuse. This session explores local and global initiatives to tackle the inherent power imbalances in humanitarian assistance and keep peacekeepers accountable to their principle of ‘Do No Harm.’

Married, Still a Child (1:25)
> IMAGE Plus is a project funded by The Embassy of The Kingdom of Netherlands working in Bangladesh. It aims to improve the lives of early married girls across Bangladesh. Currently it has over 9000 early married girls under the project in 3 northern areas of the country which are most prone to cases of child marriage. The project provides information and sensitization to these girls, their families and surrounding communities through local level interventions. Alongside these the project also conducts national level advocacy campaigns through various national media outlets to sensitize the masses on the situation of these girls and bring about policy changes to help these girls achieve their full potential. This TVC was produced and aired nationally though TV and online media to sensitize the mass audience, especially the government and policy makers. It portrays the struggles most early married girls have to go through due to their premature marriages. They lose their childhood and are married but still children.

Girls of Hope (3:11)
> In the Eastern and Southeastern regions of Turkey, the illiteracy rate among women is near 45 percent. For years, the government, NGOs and individual effort have worked to improve the situation. However, economic hardship and strict traditions still prevent many girls from access to education. Filmed in Van, Eastern Turkey, the documentary portrays a few girls who struggle for their education and, despite all the difficulties, try to hold on to their hope for a better future.

Tabu (14:12)
> Tabu, a school girl in rural Tanzania, is desperate to go to school to improve her chances in life but the risks she takes to get here, threaten the very thing she cherishes the most: her education. This narrative fiction was created from the testimony of young women and made by first-time filmmakers in the community of Lindi, Southern Tanzania in collaboration with the filmmaker and the NGO. Always - Generation of Firsts (2:42)
> There is a generational shift happening in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and a new wave of Saudi women is emerging. At this turning point, Always wanted to celebrate this Generation of Firsts, in a society that provides no real precedent to what they’re embarking on. Not only we celebrated Firsts by featuring achievers, but we also made a first, by entrusting the direction and shooting of the film exclusively to an all female Saudi crew. This not only exceeded every KPI set for the initiative, it also prompted more than 1,500 women to create their own content and join the Generation of Firsts. Director(s): Ralph Arida

Reel Women Seen (7:48)
> REEL WOMEN SEEN tells the story of the realities faced by women in the film and TV industry yet simultaneously depicts the necessary, possible and achievable ways to transform them. The story is set in common TV backdrops – from a police procedural to a sitcom (complete with laugh track), to a medical drama, to a webisode series. One continuous narrative unfolds through a series of brief parodies, ending with resolve for change. The project features an ensemble cast of women as widely diverse as imaginable. > In collaboration with the Women's Foundation of Minnesota (WFMN) and the Young Women's Initiative of Minnesota (YWI MN), this short documentary, narrated by high-school aged girls of color, focuses on standards of beauty and the role mainstream media plays in influencing the negative perception of women and girls of color by others and the self-image of girls of color. Funding Gender Equality and Women's Rights: The Power of Partnerships

What Do Men Have To Do With It? The Merits of Male Engagement

We will kick things off with a reception with food and drink followed by an interactive activity and conversation about USAID’s new guiding document on male engagement in family planning - Essential Considerations for Engaging Men and Boys to Improve Family Planning Outcomes. Then join us for lightening talks about APC’s Emanzi boys mentoring program in Uganda, FACT’s son and daughter game used in transforming gender norms through game play, the IGWG Male Engagement Task Force’s do's and don’ts for engaging men and boys, and Edna Adan Ismail's experience addressing gender dynamics while engaging men through her work in Somaliland. We’ll wrap up with questions and answers from the audience and time for everyone to delve deeper into these fascinating programs at individual game stations. Come learn, talk, listen, and play!
