Women’s contributions to health are valued at 5% of global GDP. Yet, gender proactive policies are lacking and barriers to women’s economic participation need to be addressed. Healthy Women, Healthy Economies links stakeholders globally to advance women’s well-being and employment. Using evidence beginning with The Lancet Women and Health Commission, this panel will discuss the myriad ways in which women’s paid and unpaid work can contribute to health and spur equitable economic growth and human development.

Gender Equality Starts Early: Interventions to Transform Gender Norms Among Very Young Adolescents

Early adolescence (ages 10-14) is a period of rapid change and considerable opportunity. While very young adolescents (VYA) are increasingly impacted by gender inequality, they may also be most amenable to change. This session will highlight how interventions that target VYA, their families, and communities can catalyze change in gendered attitudes, behaviors, and norms to improve health outcomes for adolescents. The session will feature three programs, led by Promundo in Malawi, Rutgers in Indonesia, and Save the Children in Democratic Republic of Congo.

A Woman Even Here: Women Issues in Humanitarian Settings in the Arab States Region

Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems are critical for protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of women and girls; facilitating access to health, education, and loans; and preventing child marriage. They equip countries with evidence to design policies that address the unique needs of vulnerable groups and provide real-time data for measuring progress towards gender equality. Yet despite their importance, many countries do not have functioning CRVS systems and gendered barriers persist. Join gender equality, gender data, and CRVS experts for a thought-provoking conversation about why efforts to achieve gender equality and women’s and girls’ rights must include CRVS systems.
