Samrawit Assefa

Organization: Ethiopian Broadcasting Service

Samrawit Assefa

Samrawit Assefa is a senior TV journalist and show producer, who has been working with EBS TV for the last seven years. She has been working with the TV station since its early beginnings and is recognized as one of the most professional journalists and producers in Ethiopia. Samrawit was recognized by US government as young emerging leaders and participated in the International Visitors leadership Program (IVLP) held in the US and organized by the State Department. She was also recognized as a woman leader by the Australian embassy. Samrawit has produced over 400 TV programs and documentaries from Ethiopia, Israel, India, USA, Australia, Turkey, France, Thailand, and Ghana. She is a skilled journalist and serves as a mentor for aspiring women journalists. Samrawit attended Addis Ababa University for her undergraduate and graduate degree. She is currently leading a weekly TV program called "New Life" that focuses on health, gender and social issues to improve the lives and living conditions of Ethiopians throughout the country.

Gamuchirai Masiyiwa

Gamuchirai Masiyiwa is a Reporter with Global Press Journal, an award winning international news platform. She joined the 13-year-old organization in 2016 as a Reporter and now co-leads a team of reporters who cover health, human rights and the economy from three news bureaus across Zimbabwe. Gamuchirai's work at Global Press Journal is read by local audiences and millions of people around the world.

Tina is a Video Journalist based in Vancouver for Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. A proud Métis from BC, Tina began her television career in 1997 as a videographer. She has also produced documentaries and feature films that have won numerous awards at various film festivals.

Laxmi Parthasarathy

Laxmi Parthasarathy

Laxmi Parthasarathy is the Chief Operating Officer of Global Press. She leads global operations across each Global Press brand, spearheads the global expansion strategy to build new bureaus, and develops new partnership strategies to bolster the organization’s reach and long-term sustainability. Over her career, she has led initiatives at the intersection of media and development in Canada, India, Rwanda, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and the UK. Most recently, Laxmi served as Director of Global Media Partnerships and Change Leader at Ashoka, the world’s largest association of social entrepreneurs. She is the author of the University of Michigan report, “The Bottom-Up Media Revolution: How Social Entrepreneurs Are Building Trust Between Communities and the Media,” which analyzed data on 200 media innovators across 22 countries.

Dr. Ana Baptista

Dr. Ana Baptista

Dr. Ana Baptista is the GBV Officer for Jhpiego Mozambique, where she leads a CDC/DREAMS and GBVI program to prevent new HIV Infections among adolescent girls and young women by addressing structural drivers of HIV infection such as sexual violence. She is a physician with 7 years of experience in GBV and gender, and developed a groundbreaking quality improvement tool for integrated post-GBV care that has since been adapted for global use by Jhpiego, PEPFAR/CDC, and WHO. Ana supported the Ministry of Health in Mozambique to develop comprehensive training curricula and policies on post-GBV care and routine enquiry for GBV.

Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno

Organization: World Health Organization

Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno

Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno is a physician from Mexico with a Masters (MSc) in community medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has worked extensively in public health and global health policy, with a focus on women's health, including SRHR and HIV/AIDS. She is currently in WHO’s Department of Reproductive Health and Research where she leads WHO’s work on violence against women. She coordinated the WHO Multi-Country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence and global and regional estimates on violence against women. Dr. Garcia-Moreno is a founder of and chaired the Sexual Violence Research Initiative.

Lydia Tabuke

Lydia Tabuke

Lydia Tabuke is an award winning social entrepreneur and youth influencer with over 5 years experience in advancing access to comprehensive SRHR among disadvantaged rural poor young women. She is the project coordinator at the Sisari Women Initiative Group, a local non-profit-young woman- led organization based in Kakamega County. Lydia holds a Degree in Education from the University of Nairobi and Diploma in Project Management from the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM). She has wide experience in young women’s leadership, social entrepreneurship skills, rights advocacy and communication.

Dr. Henia Dakkak

Organization: UNFPA

Dr. Henia Dakkak

Dr. Dakkak is a medical doctor, public health specialist and a past Fulbright postdoctoral research scholar at Columbia University. Dr. Dakkak works with UNFPA country offices to deal with humanitarian preparedness, emergency response, disaster risk reduction, recovery and resilience related to providing sexual and reproductive health services and in GBV prevention and response. Dr. Dakkak was previously the Director of Relief and Development programs with International Medical Corps (IMC) and worked as technical advisor for the Reproductive Health in Conflict Consortium. She founded a multi-specialty medical center in Jerusalem and has collaborated with NGOs, OFDA, PRM, European Commission, DFID, CIDA, ECHO and NATO. Dr. Dakkak was born in Jerusalem.

Dr. Daniela Ligiero

Organization: Together for Girls

Dr. Daniela Ligiero

Dr. Daniela Ligiero is Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Together for Girls and serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children. She served as VP of Girls and Women’s Strategy at the UN Foundation and led the U.S. Department of State’s integration of gender into PEPFAR strategy and programming and helped develop the first U.S. Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence Globally. She earned her doctoral degree in counselling psychology from the University of Maryland. Dr. Ligiero is fluent in English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.

Dr. Aflodis Kagaba

Organization: Health Development Initiative, Rwanda

Dr. Aflodis Kagaba

Dr. Kagaba is a physician and human rights advocate with over ten years of experience in the planning and management of health programs. He co-founded HDI to promote health and development among disadvantaged communities and serves on several boards, including the Rwandan NGO Network for Water, Sanitation, and Environment, The Rwandan Youth Association for Human Rights Promotion and Development (AJPRODHO – JIJUKIRWA) and a member of the steering committee for the East African Health Platform. He holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the School of Medicine at the National University of Rwanda and a Master of Science degree in International Health Policy and Management from the Heller School at Brandeis University.

Sex and Power: The Dynamics Between Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Intimate partner violence and other forms of gender-based violence (GBV) can directly impact sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) - from the ability to access and utilize family planning tools, to an increased risk of unintended pregnancy, and sexual transmitted infections. Because healthcare providers are often the first or only person to support the SRHR of GBV survivors, integration of screening and prevention services is crucial. On the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development and its Programme of Action, this session examines successful interventions, guidance, and tools to address the linkages between SRHR and GBV.
