Giselle Carino

Organization: International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR)

Giselle Carino

In her role as CEO & Regional Director for IPPF/WHR, Giselle leads a network of 45 autonomous local partners that work to guarantee that sexual and reproductive health and rights are a human right for all. In previous positions, Giselle served as IPPF/WHR Deputy Regional Director, and as the Director of Programs she led the Safe Abortion Team. She is a co-founder and past coordinator of the Latin American Consortium Against Unsafe Abortion. She serves on the Board of Directors of Women’s Link Worldwide, Catholics for the Right to Decide/Mexico and the Center for Health and Gender Equity.

Taryn Frazier

Organization: Women Deliver Young Leader

Taryn Frazier

Taryn Frazier is passionate about advocating for quality, accessible healthcare and amplifying Black women’s voices in all spaces. She received her bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). As a Communications Assistant at the Labor Occupational Safety and Health Program at UCLA, she is responsible for generating and managing all social media content and profiles, co-managing the production of the 40th anniversary video, and creating a communications calendar for 2018. As an advocate, she is proud to be a Global Youth Advocacy Fellow for Planned Parenthood, which inspired her to pursue a master’s degree and career in Public Health. Taryn was inspired to be an advocate by the caucus of Black women who in 1994 coined the term “reproductive justice” because these women serve as a reminder that reproductive justice is intersectional and for everyone.

Dr. Carole Sekimpi

Organization: Marie Stopes Uganda

Dr. Carole Sekimpi

Dr. Carole Sekimpi is Country Director for Marie Stopes UG (Uganda). She is a public health specialist, with broad experience working with both local and international development agencies. She is particularly excited about preventative rather than curative interventions, with a strong focus on health issues affecting women and girls. She is passionate about her work with Marie Stopes International, as it provides her with the opportunity to support women and girls blossom to their fullest potential.

Chloë Cooney

Organization: Planned Parenthood Global

Chloë Cooney

Chloë Cooney is Senior Director, Strategy and Programs at Planned Parenthood Global, the international arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). In this role, she oversees programming to expand access to sexual and reproductive health and rights through innovative advocacy, service delivery and social norms strategies in 12 countries in Africa and Latin America. Previously, Chloë launched PPFA's foreign policy advocacy work, where she helped protect U.S. international family planning funding during unprecedented opposition in Congress. Chloë has also worked in high-impact philanthropy, supporting donors to make strategic global health advocacy investments. Chloe lives in Washington, D.C., with her wife and son.

Mulumba Moses

Mulumba Moses

Mulumba Moses is a Lawyer with special interest in International Human Rights, Global Health and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights. He has a Bachelor’s of Laws (LLB), Post Graduate Bar qualification, Master of Laws and Master of Philosophy in health sciences. Mulumba has widely researched, published and taught in the various areas of global health and international human rights. He has been an African Advisor to the HIV and the Law Commission and a former board member to the Uganda National Drug Authority (NDA). Mr. Mulumba has successfully been a principle and co-investigator on a number of research projects funded among others IDRC, SIDA, Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation, European Union, the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR) and the European Space Agency. His recent projects include serving as a legal researcher on a scoping assessment of the global financing facility (GFF) implementation in Uganda and study on developing the regulatory aspects for Satellite-Enhanced Telemedicine and eHealth for sub-Saharan Africa (eHSA).

Ungagged: The Latest Strategies for Advancing SRHR and Gender Equality Amidst the Global Gag Rule

Reinstated and expanded in 2017, Global Gag Rule (also known as the Mexico City Policy), has affected the movement for abortion rights, gender equality, and global health worldwide. It prohibits all recipients of global health funding from the United States of America from providing legal abortion services or referrals – even when funded from other sources – and impacts a range of organizations working to expand access to contraception, prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, combat malaria, and improve maternal and child health. Women’s rights and health champions are pushing back. This session will provide essential information on how the Global Gag Rule impacts programs and people, and discuss best practices, advocacy opportunities, and funding mechanisms for affected organizations and communities.

A Swiss and French national, Alain Délétroz has an experience of more than twenty years of work in conflict regions and countries under political tensions. His areas of expertise include the Andean countries and Brasil; Russia, North/South Caucasus and Central Asia; EU external action; West Africa; conflict assessment and conflict resolution; democratic reforms, humanitarian assistance. His professional background includes: Executive in Residence at the Geneva Center for Security Policy, Vice-President at the International Crisis Group, Brussels; director, Open Society Institute, Tashkent; delegate International Committee of the Red Cross, Moscow; Adult literacy and capacity building project manager, Interteam, Carabaya, Peru.

Mariana Casij Peña

Organization: Institute for Integrated Transitions, Colombia

Mariana Casij Peña

Mariana Casij Peña is a Junior Associate with the Institute for Integrated Transitions where she advises in transitional justice and victims rights for several projects of the Institute. Prior to joining IFIT, Mariana worked as a consultant for the Presidential Advisor for Human Rights in Colombia and as a legal adviser for the Victims Unit during the negotiations between the Colombian Government and the FARC, as well as, during the subsequent implementation phase. Mariana also worked for the Victims Unit on national cases of collective reparations and as a consultant for the Transitional Justice Directorate of the Colombian Ministry of Justice. Mariana teaches at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia in areas of memory, transitional justice and human rights. Mariana holds a BA in Law from the Universidad Javeriana and a Masters Degree in Human Rights and Democratization from the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratization.

Hon. Ellen Attoh-Wreh

Hon. Ellen Attoh-Wreh

Hon. Ambassador Ellen Attoh-Wreh serves in the 54th National Legislature of the Republic of Liberia as Representative for Electoral District # 3, Margibi County. Hon. Wreh champions the cause of Rural Women Empowerment and has instituted several programs to enhance Rural Women and Adolescent Girls empowerment capacities. Hon. Wreh remains firm in her legislative duties while balancing her actions in support of Women Empowerment and Growth. Hon. Wreh serves on several key committees to include Co-Chair on the Margibi Legislative Caucus, Co-Chair on Investment & Concessions, State Owned Enterprises and Autonomous Agency and Secretary to the Judiciary Committee.

Ambassador Melanne Verveer

Organization: Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security

Ambassador Melanne Verveer

Ambassador Verveer served as the first U.S. Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues, a position to which she was nominated by President Obama in 2009. She coordinated foreign policy issues and activities relating to the political, economic and social advancement of women, traveling to nearly sixty countries and developing the U.S. National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. President Obama also appointed her to serve as the U.S. Representative to the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Amb. Verveer currently serves as the Special Representative on Gender Issues for the OSCE Chairmanship.
